Aldinga Beach House
Project Description
We’ve been working on this project since 2023. Our clients have been patiently working towards their forever home for some time, with this particular design, the forth major design iteration, coming to fruition as the reasliation of years of work.
The brief called for a home that would support the clients through retirement. Featuring a central outdoor entertaining area facing onto the back garden and a dedicated workshop for the pursuit of hobbies in retirement. There’s also occasional spaces upstairs to serve visits from their adult children.
The initial design concepts explored a more dispersed arrangement of internal spaces across the site. However, cost estimates and concerns about overdevelopment prompted a shift toward a more conventional layout. This led to the current two-storey design, which features spacious open-plan living plus the master bedroom and ensuite located on the ground floor.
Reworking the design also provided an opportunity to enhance the outdoor areas. The revised layout allowed for a larger entertaining space and a more open backyard—features that ultimately satisfied the clients’ needs.
The home is to be constructed entirely with conventional timber framing (no steel) using 140mm thick walls wrapped in Proclima membranes with cavity battens. Sustainability and energy efficiency were key priorities, reflected in features such as insulated slab edges, double glazing with composite frames, hydronic slab heating, smart lighting, and an all-electric home (appliances) powered by a 9.5kW solar PV system and a 32kW battery.
