High Performance, Multi-generational Home (Built by Enduro), Payneham SA

Project Info
Harmonic Design worked closely with Brett Aylen Architecture to determine the key planning, design and functional layout of this exemplary home which was constructed in place of an old bungalow on a flat domestic allotment.
The clients brought a complex brief for a multi-generational home that required privacy and seclusion towards the rear of the block via a separate pedestrian entry, whilst also providing for a four bedroom family home with living areas toward the front and combined with outdoor living areas east and west.
We succeeded in resolving the complex programmatic requirements all under one continuous, low-form ‘flat’ roof by dividing the rectangular allotment into six primary spaces and then dividing those areas with a long central axis. This way all zones within the home can be accessed easily whilst also providing for a sense of separation. This design creates a sort of ‘cross-breeze’ style of access from one side of each open plan living spaces to another; with views or openings leading to at least one outdoor living space (in some cases two).
Window and door placement was considered in much detail, not only to ensure good passive solar heat gain but to achieve a sense of separation of living quarters and to combine privacy with optimal natural light.
